Can You Return Clearance Items at Home Depot? Return Rules
In this guide 10 sections
The short answer
Generally, yes. Home Depot's published return policy doesn't list clearance as an exception, so clearance items usually follow the same rules as regular items. The exceptions are items the store marks final sale, as-is or damaged, and categories that have shorter windows anyway. Ask at checkout if you're not sure.
Home Depot return windows
Based on Home Depot's published policy as summarized by deal sites:
| Item type | Return window |
|---|---|
| Most new items | 90 days |
| Furniture, gas-powered equipment and tractors, some electronics, paint sprayers | 30 days |
| Major appliances | 48 hours to report problems |
| Perennials, trees, roses and shrubs | 1 year |
| Purchases on a Home Depot credit card or Pro account | 365 days |
Some items can't be returned at all, like gift cards, custom orders and third-party marketplace items. Check Home Depot's site for the full current policy.
Before you buy clearance
Clearance items are often open, displayed or the last one left, so check:
- All the parts are in the box.
- It works, if you can test it.
- The receipt says what you expect. Keep it.
- The return window for that category, especially appliances, patio furniture and grills.
What about penny items?
A return refunds what you paid, so returning a penny item gets you a penny. It isn't worth the trip, and it can create friction with the store. Follow penny shopping etiquette.
No receipt?
If you paid by card, Home Depot may be able to find the purchase within 90 days with a valid government ID. Keeping your receipt, or using the Home Depot app's purchase history, makes returns much easier.
Clearance, open box and as-is: what's different
| Label | What it usually means | Returns |
|---|---|---|
| Clearance (yellow tag) | New item, marked down | Usually normal window |
| Open box | Returned or opened item | Ask the store |
| As-is or damaged | Sold with known damage | Often not returnable, ask |
| Final sale | Marked final on the tag or receipt | Not returnable |
When in doubt, ask the cashier to note it on your receipt.
Returning to a different store
Home Depot generally allows returns at other stores for regular store items. Special orders may need to go back to the same store. Bring your receipt or order number and the card you paid with.
Clearance returns and refunds
A return refunds what you paid, not the original price. If you bought a $199 tool on clearance for $49, a return gets you $49 back. That matters if you're returning a gift or an item bought on clearance by someone else.
Exchanges for defective clearance items
Home Depot's policy allows exchanging defective store stock for the same item within the standard window. On clearance, the same item may be gone, so ask whether a refund or a different item is possible.

The best way to avoid returns is to know what you're getting. PennyLoot shows clearance at the Home Depot stores near your ZIP with each store's price, stock and price history, plus member reports on whether an item is still there. Check your ZIP on the home page.
