Is That Home Depot Clearance Item Still There? How to Check
In this guide 7 sections
Why "in stock" doesn't always mean on the shelf
Clearance items move around. They end up in a clearance endcap, back in their original aisle, on a top shelf, or in the back room. Items near the end of clearance, and penny items, are often pulled from the floor while the system still counts them.
So the stock number in the Home Depot app is a good start, but it's not proof.
How to check before you drive
- Check the Home Depot app. Pick the store, search the Store SKU or Internet number, and look at the price and stock.
- Look at the price history. If the item just got a deep markdown, other hunters may be on it too. See clearance price history.
- Check member reports on PennyLoot. Open the deal and look for "Still there" or "Reported gone", with how long ago it was.
Still there / Gone: how it works
After you visit a store, open the deal, tap View store, and tap:
- ✓ Still there if you found it,
- ✕ Gone if you looked and it wasn't there.
Everyone sees the latest report on the deal card, like "✓ Still there · 2 h ago", and the number of reports in the store list. Tap again to undo. It takes one second and saves other members a wasted trip, and they do the same for you.
Why reports beat a stock number
The Home Depot app counts what the system thinks is in the store. A member report tells you what a real person saw on the shelf. Both are useful together:
| Source | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| App stock count | Updated by the system | Can count pulled or lost items |
| Member report | A real person looked | Only as fresh as the last visit |
| Price history | Shows if it's still dropping | Doesn't show the shelf |
When the app shows stock and a recent report says "Still there", your odds are good. When a report says "Gone", skip that store and try another.
How to make a good report
- Report after you look in the usual spots: the clearance area, the item's regular aisle and nearby end caps.
- Report "Gone" only if you really looked. Other members rely on it.
- Change your report if you go back and find it.
Penny items and "still there"
Penny items get pulled quickly once staff notice them. A "Still there" report from a few hours ago is valuable. One from several days ago is less certain. Look at how long ago the report was made, shown on each deal.
Tips in the store
- Check the clearance endcaps and the item's normal aisle.
- Look up high: overstock is often stored above the shelf.
- Be polite if you ask an associate. See our penny shopping etiquette.
- Scan the item's own barcode in the Home Depot app before you get in line.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Home Depot app stock count accurate for clearance?
Not always. Clearance items get moved, hidden or pulled, and penny items are often removed from the floor while the system still shows stock.
What do Still there and Gone mean on PennyLoot?
They're reports from members who visited the store. Still there means a member found the item. Gone means a member looked and couldn't find it. You see the latest report and how long ago it was made.
Can I change my report?
Yes. Tap the other button to change it, or tap the same one again to remove it. Each member has one report per item per store.
How long do reports stay?
Reports from the last 7 days are shown. Shelves change fast, so older reports are hidden.
