What we looked at

PennyLoot checks the clearance prices at Home Depot stores for our users. For this report we looked at every clearance listing we saw in the 35 days up to October 31, 2026:

  • 270,165 clearance listings (one item at one store)
  • 562 Home Depot stores across the US
  • Items with a clearance price above $0

A few notes so the numbers are read the right way:

  • This isn't every store or every department. We check the stores near our users, and not every department at every store. Compare the percentages, not the raw counts.
  • Penny prices don't appear in listings. When an item hits $0.01, its price is usually pulled from the store's listing. So penny items show up in our data as "likely pennies," not as $0.01 prices. More on that below.
  • Prices change fast. This is a snapshot, not a promise of what's at your store today.

How deep Home Depot clearance goes

Discount Share
At least 50% off 64%
At least 75% off 42%
Median discount 64% off
Under $1 12%

In plain words: if you find a yellow tag at Home Depot, it's more likely than not to be half off or better. And roughly 1 in 8 clearance items costs less than a dollar.

That's why we always say clearance is worth checking even when you're not hunting penny items. The "boring" deep markdowns are far more common than pennies.

Which departments have the deepest clearance

Department Median discount 75%+ off Under $1 Median $ saved
Paint 90% 79% 21% $15
Cleaning 85% 69% 24% $8
Kitchen 84% 63% 8% $77
Plumbing 81% 59% 17% $32
Hardware 75% 51% 20% $7
Outdoors & Garden 63% 44% 14% $15
Storage & Organization 63% 27% 4% $11
Garage 56% 30% 7% $12
Electrical 55% 38% 17% $10
Tools 53% 20% 2% $46
Flooring 50% 26% 4% $13
Lighting & Ceiling Fans 49% 29% 13% $19
Bath 37% 18% 1% $15

What stands out:

  • Paint is the deepest. Half of paint clearance was 90% off or more. That includes discontinued colors, supplies and samples. See our oops paint guide.
  • Kitchen has the biggest dollar savings among departments with deep discounts, a median of $77 off. Faucets, small appliances and fixtures add up.
  • Tools save you dollars, not percentages. Tool clearance is usually 50–60% off, but with a median of $46 saved, it's one of the best places for real value. See Home Depot tool clearance and real examples in clearance tool prices by brand.
  • Lighting and Bath are milder. Discounts are smaller on average, but big-ticket fixtures still show up. Our lighting clearance guide covers where to look.
  • Holiday items are seasonal. In late October, the few holiday listings we saw had a median discount of 92%. Expect much more after Halloween and Christmas. See the seasonal clearance calendar.

Are price endings reliable?

Penny hunters often watch the last digits of a price. The theory says .06, .03 and .02 mean late markdowns, and pennies come next. Here's how common each ending was in our data:

Ending Share
.00 20.6%
.97 1.2%
.03 0.4%
.02 0.4%
.06 0.2%

So .03 and .02 prices are rare. Most items that are 75% off or more don't end in .03 or .02 at all. Endings can be a hint, but the size of the discount and the age of the tag tell you more. We go deeper in Home Depot price endings and the markdown schedule.

How often penny items show up

Between October 18 and November 1, 2026, across the same 562 stores, we flagged:

  • 157 likely pennies: items whose price was pulled from the store's listing, a common sign of a penny
  • About 2,580 near pennies: items under $1 or on a final .03/.02 markdown

The departments with the most likely pennies were Outdoors & Garden, Electrical, Cleaning, Flooring, Tools and Garage.

That's real, but spread thin: a few hundred items across hundreds of stores. Any one store might have none this week and three next week. That's why penny lists from other states rarely match your store, and why checking several stores near you works better. Our penny items near me guide shows how.

Remember that a likely penny isn't confirmed until it rings up, and the store can refuse the sale. Read the penny policy before you go.

What this means for your next trip

  1. Check clearance in every department you pass. Most yellow tags are half off or more.
  2. Pick departments by goal. Want the biggest percentage? Paint, Cleaning, Plumbing. Want the most dollars saved? Kitchen and Tools.
  3. Don't rely on price endings alone. Look at the discount and the tag date.
  4. Check more than one store. Prices differ store to store, and pennies are rare at any single store.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Home Depot clearance usually marked down?

In our data, the median clearance item was about 64% off. Roughly 2 in 3 items were at least half off, and about 4 in 10 were at least 75% off.

Which Home Depot department has the best clearance?

By percentage off, Paint (median about 90% off), Cleaning (85%), Kitchen (84%) and Plumbing (81%) had the deepest markdowns. Tools had smaller percentages but bigger dollar savings, a median of about $46 off.

How common are Home Depot penny items?

Penny prices never show in online listings, so we track signs of them instead. Over two weeks we flagged 157 likely pennies and about 2,580 near-penny items across 562 stores. That's real but rare, which is why checking many stores matters.

Do .03 and .02 price endings mean an item will be a penny?

Not reliably. In our data, fewer than 1% of clearance prices ended in .03 and fewer than 1% in .02. Most deep markdowns had other endings, so look at the discount size and tag date too.
