What is oops paint?

"Oops" paint (also called mistint) is paint that was mixed but never sold. Maybe the color came out wrong. Maybe the customer changed their mind or never picked it up. Home Depot can't sell it as a custom color, so it goes on a discount shelf.

The paint itself is the same quality as full-price paint. Only the color is a surprise.

Where to find oops paint at Home Depot

Look near the paint mixing desk. Most stores keep oops paint on a shelf, cart or low rack close by. Some put it at the end of the paint aisle or by the registers when they have too much.

The stock changes daily. A store might have twenty gallons one week and two the next. Popular neutral colors go fast.

How much does oops paint cost?

There's no fixed price. It depends on the store and the size. Shoppers commonly report:

Size Typical oops price
Sample / pint about $1 or less
Quart about $1–$3
Gallon a few dollars up to about $10
5 gallons sometimes $20–$40, when there is one

Those are rough ranges, not a promise. Always check the sticker.

Paint is one of the deepest discount areas in the store. In the Paint department clearance listings we checked across 562 stores, the median item was about 90% off its original price. That includes more than just oops paint (supplies and discontinued colors too), but it shows how hard paint gets marked down. More numbers like this are in our Home Depot clearance data report.

How to pick a good can

  1. Look at the dab on the lid. The paint desk usually puts a dried drop of the color on top. Trust that, not the color name.
  2. Check the base and finish. Flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss. Make sure it fits the job.
  3. Check interior vs. exterior. Exterior paint costs more new, so it's a better deal on the oops shelf.
  4. Check the can. Skip rusty, dented or leaking cans.
  5. Buy enough. You probably won't find the same color again. Grab every can of it you need.

Can you change the color?

Often, yes. The paint desk can usually add tint to an oops can. That works well to darken a color or nudge it toward a shade you like. They can't make a dark color lighter. Mixing a few oops gallons of similar colors (in a bucket at home) is another common trick for big jobs like a garage or basement.

Can you return paint to Home Depot?

This is the question we see most:

  • Unopened, untinted paint: usually returnable under Home Depot's normal return policy with a receipt.
  • Custom-tinted paint: usually not returnable unless it's defective.
  • Oops paint: sold as is. Treat it as final sale.

Return rules can change and stores can make exceptions, so keep your receipt and ask before you buy if it matters. For clearance in general, see can you return clearance items at Home Depot.

Is oops paint a good deal?

For the right job, it's one of the best deals in the store:

  • Great for: garages, basements, closets, primer coats, furniture, craft projects, rentals
  • Less great for: a room where you need one exact color

If you're flexible on color, you can paint a whole room for the price of a quart.

More cheap paint and supplies

Oops paint isn't the only discount in the paint aisle. Brushes, rollers, stains and discontinued colors also end up on clearance, and some never get a yellow tag. See Home Depot hidden clearance for how to spot them.
