The short answer: no checkout button for a penny

People search for "Home Depot penny items online" hoping for a list they can add to a cart. It doesn't exist. A penny item is an item a single store has marked down to $0.01, usually as a signal to pull it off the shelf. That price lives in the store's register system. It never reaches the website.

So you can't:

  • add a penny item to your online cart
  • order it for store pickup or delivery
  • get the penny price by ordering online and picking up in store

Online orders always use the online price. And by the time an item is close to a penny, it's usually no longer sold online at all.

What you can do online

You can't buy pennies online, but you can find them online. That's how most experienced hunters work now. Instead of walking every aisle, they check prices from home and only drive for items that look promising.

Here's what to look for when you check an item with your store selected.

"See price in store"

When an item shows "see price in store" or no price at all at your store, the store's price is different from the online one. Often that's a clearance price. Sometimes it's a penny. We cover this in detail in Home Depot price not showing online.

A clearance price ending in .03 or .02

Prices that end in .03 or .02 usually mean the item is on its last markdown. Pennies often come next. See Home Depot price endings for what each ending means.

Low or zero stock

An item with one or two units left at a store, on clearance for weeks, is a good candidate. If it shows as unavailable everywhere online but the store still has units, take a closer look.

How to check penny candidates from home

  1. Pick your stores. Two or three Home Depots near you is enough to start.
  2. Make a short list. Old clearance, discontinued items and out-of-season stock are the usual candidates. Our guide to where penny items show up in the store helps here.
  3. Check each item with each store selected. Note anything with no price, "see price in store," or a .03/.02 ending.
  4. Go in person and scan. Use the app's scanner or a price check station. The register has the final word.

This works, but it's slow. You can only check items you already know about, one store at a time.

The faster way: let a tool check your stores

PennyLoot checks the clearance prices at the Home Depot stores near your ZIP in every department. It flags:

  • Likely pennies: items whose price was pulled from the store's listing, a common sign of a penny
  • Near pennies: items under $1 or on their final .03/.02 markdown
  • Hidden prices: items where the store shows "see price in store"

Before you drive

A penny you found online is a lead, not a promise. Before you go:

Online clearance vs. in-store clearance

Don't confuse the two. Home Depot does sell some clearance online, mostly special buys and closeouts shipped from warehouses. Those prices are the same for everyone. Store clearance (the yellow tags) is different at every store and is only sold in person. Pennies come from store clearance only.

Frequently asked questions

Can I order a Home Depot penny item for store pickup?

No. Online orders use the online price, not the store's clearance or penny price. Penny items are also usually blocked from online sale before they hit $0.01.

Why does Home Depot show 'see price in store' online?

It often means the store has a price that's different from the online one, usually a clearance price. Sometimes that clearance price is a penny, which is why penny hunters watch for it.

Is there a website that shows Home Depot penny items?

There's no official one. Community groups share finds, and tools like PennyLoot check the clearance prices at the stores near your ZIP and flag items that look like pennies.

Do penny items show up in the Home Depot app?

Not as $0.01. If you scan or search an item with your store selected, the app may show a clearance price, no price, or 'see price in store.' The register is the only place a penny price shows up.
