Why is a Home Depot price not showing online?

If you've ever looked up an item and found the Home Depot price not showing online, or seen "see price in store" instead, you're not alone. It's one of the most common things penny hunters ask about.

The short answer: a missing price can mean a lot of things. Sometimes it's a sign the item has dropped to $0.01 after its last markdown. Often it's something more boring. Home Depot doesn't publish what each message means, so what follows is based on what shoppers and employees commonly report, plus what we see in our own scans.

For the bigger picture on pennies, start with our complete guide to Home Depot penny items.

Common reasons a price is missing

Here are the usual suspects when a price won't show on homedepot.com or in the app:

What you see Common reasons
"See price in store" Store-only item, clearance item, or the listing doesn't show a price for your store
No price at all Item removed from the website, discontinued, or price removed after a late markdown
"Unavailable" or "not sold in store" Your store doesn't carry it, or it's being phased out
0 in stock, but it's on the shelf Inventory count is off, or the item was marked for removal
Price shown, but different at the register Price changed, shelf tag lagging, or wrong store set in the app

Only one of those is "it's a penny." The rest are normal parts of how a big retailer manages thousands of products.

Check your store setting first

Before you read anything into a missing price, make sure your store is set correctly in the app. Prices and stock are store-specific. If you're checking the wrong store, you're getting the wrong answer.

Our guide on how to check prices in the Home Depot app shows how to set your store and check prices item by item.

When a missing price can point to a penny

Penny items often show up oddly in the Home Depot app. Shoppers commonly report seeing:

  • No price for their store.
  • "See price in store."
  • "Unavailable."
  • 0 in stock, even though they're holding the item.

The pattern hunters look for is a combination: an item that was on clearance, often deep clearance, and then its price disappears. That's a stronger hint than a missing price by itself.

Here's a real example from our scans. At a Houston-area store in October 2026, a 4-light black faux wood beaded pendant light was on clearance at $49.98 (was $99.97). A little later, its price disappeared from Home Depot's site. We flagged it as a "likely penny." We can't say whether it actually rang up at $0.01 or whether the store would have sold it. But that clearance-then-gone pattern is what hunters watch for.

When a missing price is not a penny

Plenty of items with no online price are not pennies. A few common cases:

  • Items that were never on clearance. A regular-price item with no online price is probably just a website or listing issue.
  • Store-only products. Some items simply aren't priced online.
  • Discontinued items still at full price. They can drop off the website before they're ever marked down.
  • Data glitches. Sometimes the website just doesn't load a price.

If an item shows no price online but has a normal tag, isn't on clearance, and has plenty of stock, don't get your hopes up.

How to check the real price

The only price that counts is what the item rings up at in your store. Here's how to check without making a fuss:

  1. Set your store in the Home Depot app. Make sure it's the store you're in.
  2. Scan the item's barcode in the app. See what price, stock, and location it shows.
  3. Compare to the shelf tag. Shelf tags often lag the system price, so a mismatch isn't unusual.
  4. Scan the UPC at self-checkout. This is the real answer. Cover any QR codes on the box so the scanner reads the product barcode.
  5. Accept the result. If it's a penny, the store may or may not sell it.

Scan the item's own barcode only. Never scan shelf tags or use any trick to change what the register reads.

If you're not sure which number is which, read Home Depot SKU vs UPC vs Internet number. Short version: the Store SKU is for the app, and the 12-digit UPC is what the register scans.

Hidden price items worth checking

A "hidden price" item is one with no price online that's still in stock at a store. Those are worth a closer look, especially if:

  • The item was on clearance recently.
  • It's discontinued or replaced by a newer model.
  • Only a unit or two are left.
  • It's in a seasonal section after the season ended.
  • It's sitting in an odd spot, like overheads or the wrong bay.

Clearance price vs. hidden price: a quick comparison

Some items show a deep clearance price instead of a missing one. Those are still worth knowing about. Examples from our Houston-area scans in October 2026:

  • Peel 'N Stick stair tread covers (9 in. x 36 in.) at $7.40 (was $49.98).
  • RIDGID .030 E71T-GS flux-core welding wire (10 lb) at $37.00 (was $109.03).

Those were clearance prices on Home Depot's system at a specific store at that time. A price that's still showing means the store is selling it at that price. A price that vanishes after a deep markdown is the one penny hunters get curious about.

Let a scanner do the watching

Watching prices one item at a time is slow. That's part of why local clearance scanners exist.

PennyLoot checks clearance prices at the Home Depot stores near your ZIP code. When an item's price is removed online after a late markdown, it's flagged as a likely penny. Items with no online price that are still in stock get a "Hidden price" flag. Leads like these are re-checked daily. Nothing is guaranteed, though, and stores can still refuse to sell a penny item. What to do at the store

If you find a hidden-price item and it scans at $0.01, stay polite. Some stores sell one unit. Others keep the item. Managers decide, and Home Depot hasn't published a rule on it. Our post on Home Depot's penny policy covers what usually happens at checkout.

Before you drive for a "see price in store" item

  • Confirm your store is set correctly in the app.
  • Check if the item was on clearance before the price disappeared.
  • Look at the stock count and the aisle and bay location.
  • Remember that a missing price is a hint, not proof.
  • Scan the item's own UPC to see the real price.
  • Be ready for the store to say no, and be fine with it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Home Depot say see price in store?

It can mean the item's online listing doesn't carry a price for your store, often because it's store-only, clearance, discontinued, or no longer sold online. Home Depot doesn't publish a list of reasons.

Does no price in the Home Depot app mean it's a penny?

Not always. A missing price is a common hint for penny items, but it also happens to plenty of items that aren't pennies. Scan the UPC at the register to know for sure.

Why does the app say 0 in stock when the item is on the shelf?

Inventory counts can be off, and items marked for removal sometimes show 0 in stock while units are still on the floor. Penny items often look this way.

Can I ask an associate for the price of a 'see price in store' item?

You can, but if it's a penny item, staff are expected to pull it. Many hunters use the app or a self-checkout scan to check the price instead.

Does the website price match the store price at Home Depot?

Not always. Clearance prices are set store by store, so set your store in the app before checking, and trust the register over the website.
